Judging by Lu’s reactions here, her ability to detect a player from so far away (though this may just be cat ears), and the fact she doesn’t seem to exist in the real world comics, I’m almost willing to wager that she is an NPC, and the AIs are to some level self aware, just not yet autonomous like she is.
That would also explain why the group bothers defending this town, as the NPCs likely lose this chance if they die, simply getting replaced by new, fresh NPCs.
