Hey everyone!
So the TL;DR is, I’ve been feeling creatively bankrupt when it comes to making weekly comics for some time, and I’m gonna be taking a break from them for the time being. Just the weekly comics though, everything else (illustrations, MMO, art streams, animations etc..) will be going on as usual, as a matter of fact, I might be focusing on them more. Worry not as I’m not going anywhere, and neither is this a hiatus!
Now for the explanation for those who’d like to know more;
The source of inspiration for my comics here at RandoWis has always been life experiences that I’ve personally come across, with a touch of exaggeration. Basically, moments I’d like to share with everyone.
The problem with this, is that the inspiration is heavily dependent on me actually having these experiences. In the past, when RandoWis first began, though those times were tougher, it was a fact that I travelled around more, hung out more, met people constantly, played more games, and generally just explored what life had to offer, hence the abundance of ideas for weekly comics then.
However, in recent times, things have changed. In fact, it’s the complete opposite right now, with all the measures the world has taken to ensure the safety of one another. Though I must admit that the sense of creative bankruptcy had loomed in my mind LONG before this virus came along, as I no longer spent time the way I used to; outside. Even before COVID-19 made it’s debut, most of my time then (and now) was being spent indoors to work on MMO/illustrations/streams etc. I had little to no reason to go out, and neither did my buddies. Even if we did have a reason, we hardly had the time anymore. All of this amounts to me feeling like I’m boring as an individual, and that boringness reflects in my weekly comics as well. Some may disagree (and I thank you for that), but this is just how I feel.
Allow me to clarify that the fault does not lie in the art form, but rather, how I practice it. There are plenty of ways to get ideas for comics, the problem is that I’m too stubborn to do it any other way. I have tried other means to come up with jokes/ideas previously, but each time that I do, I feel like it’s not a comic I’d want to post online as the process is something I’m not used to and that the comic isn’t good enough. Which leads me to my conclusion; that I would need to take a step back from the weekly comics for the time being, so that I can reevaluate my perspectives and approach to making them.
I’d rather miss making weekly comics than hate them.
Does this mean I’m going away? Nah.
I don’t know how long I’ll take this step back, but I’ll still be here. In the meantime, I’ll put my focus on other types of art (be it animations, doodles, studies, more illustrations etc..). I’d like to do a little more exploring outside of weekly comics, and who knows, maybe I’ll post more often. Nah, that’s probably unlikely. Haha

Frankly, I agree with you. At the moment, I too go out less than before and I have the impression that my inspiration is disappearing or going elsewhere. I try to work at a steady pace (at least two or three illustrations per day). Result what I do does not really meet my expectations, it decreases in quality and I take a little less pleasure in doing a job. And resting was a great idea. Otherwise, you will be constantly stressed and it will be complicated to move forward or even impossible. I love what you do, but I much prefer that you go at your own pace and take the time to put your thoughts together, instead of getting to a point where you’re going to hate what you’re doing. And I think that by then it will be better 🙂

The problem is about quality and quantity. You can have only one. Either you create something every week but you won’t be happy about it, or you take the time that is needed and create something that’s good, that makes people laugh, that makes YOU feel good. This is a problem that many people have. Everywhere, and everyone, not only as an artist. You want to create something that is special and is good? You will need to take some time. It doesn’t matter if you make a special birthday present, work on a custom order at work or even build a house for yourself. I think everybody here (or most of the people) is ready to wait a long time and get a comic when it’s ready and burst into laughing when reading your comics. don’t blame yourself for not creating comics weekly. Take your time. And sorry for the giant post ^^

In my opinion the problem was making them “weekly” in the first place. Art should not have a schedule, since it comes from inspiration, which isn’t something you get whenever you want. That’s why artists with a schedule have highs and lows. I don’t think you should forbid yourself the joy of making a comics you came with just because that would mean returning to make them on a weekly basis, just make them whenever you feel like it.
At least that what I think as a “comic artist” myself, but on the other hand I only make my friends read what I do, and I think as one with a schedule to train myself to come up with solutions because… who knows, maybe after the graduation my destiny won’t be working in the IT industry
I’m nothing of an artist, but this makes sense to me, I agree with all of it.
I love your work! As an idea… how about having Rando and the cat [and the others] go on adventures.. like stranded on an island, going into space, etc.. As you know, any endeavor starts with a few small steps.. As you step out, ideas happen. I personally like the island idea.. you don’t have to be concerned with huge situations, and knowing your humor.. little situations can spawn more.. Nonetheless, I know we all support you, and at times taking a break is the best thing to do.. Generally, a break can and often does bring fresh insights and directions.. Frankly, I personally love the weekly comics.. Also, maybe make them bi-weekly.. or even once-in-awhile.. that way you won’t feel ‘stressed’ to need to post every week, etc.. Sometimes self-inflicted deadlines can stifle creativity.. I love your work! Inspiration will come as you like!
It’s fine with us if u need a break. U keep on going, u might end up hating art, so it’s better to rest than keep going
It’s better to take a step back during a high note than to drive it into the ground and letting it die. The content was always enjoyable, but i noticed that the downtime between content got significantly longer as time went on. Burnout is a nasty thing and it can easily ruin your love for something permanently, so do what you have to do to prevent that from happening.
A Rando’s gotta do what a Rando’s gotta do! I do hope you recover soon, being wiped out from art sucks hardcore. Best wishes my good man.
